Hoops for Hope originated in Overland Park, KS, at Blue Valley Southwest High School during the 2010 school year. Some aspects of our model were inspired by “Bookstore Basketball” at the University of Notre Dame, where our founder attended undergraduate school. The goal behind the event was to create an enthusiastic venue where KIDS HELP KIDS by combining the competition of basketball with the fun of Halloween. Our mission is to train the next generation of philanthropists by having students run and plan the event with the help of teacher sponsors. Our high schools that participate directly fund the cost of pediatric cancer care right here in Kansas City by paying patient bills at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
The event typically consists of 2 days of tournament style basketball that is made up of teams of 4 or more students/teachers. Each team chooses a fun costume theme to dress up in, and is guaranteed at least 2 games of basketball. After a few hours of taking silly pictures, playing ball, and cheering on friends, at the end of the night there is only one winner! That winner goes on to play the following night's winners in a game in front of the school to see who is the champion. The event consists of a lot of laughter, teamwork, and support from students and staff!
After seven years and $150,000 of donations...we ARE kids helping kids crush cancer!!!!
